Diaper Cake Tutorial

Today we celebrated My Sister-in-law and baby Raelynn! I can't wait to meet that sweet baby girl and so excited that Piper and her will grow up close in age. I had a lot of fun making this diaper cake for the shower. Can't wait to share more pictures of the shower. It was a book themed shower with lots of fun bright colors. We modeled the colors of the shower after Raelynn's Nursery. You can find a tutorial below on how to make the diaper cake.

You will need:

-Size 1 diapers (i used 78 for the 3 tiered cake)
-twine or ribbon
-cake pans or pots in 3 sizes

To Decorate:
-3 Burp bloths
-Baby headband
-Felt balls (about 50)
-Twine
-Wooden letter
-Yarn

Step 1: Create a line of diapers all going the same direction and evenly spaced.

Step 2: Curl the diapers into the first cake pan, adding more if needed so the pan is full.

Step 3: Tie the diapers tight with twine.

Step 4: Carefully remove the diapers from the pan. Slide twine to center of diapers. If using Pampers it will run right along the yellow line on the diapers. Now you will need to slide the diapers to fill in any larger spaces.

Step 5: Once all of the diapers are evenly space you may have a hole in the center. (shown above)

Step 6: Roll up 1-2 diapers and place inside the hole.

Step 7: Your first layer is done! Repeat Steps 1-6 for the next two layers.

Once your layers are done you can stack them, making sure each layer of diapers is going in the same direction.

To Decorate:
Create a topper by rolling three burp cloths and wrapping a headband around all three. I made the burp cloths using cloth diapers and fabric from Fabric Bubb. You can buy felt balls online in all different colors. I ordered mine on Etsy from Handmadeonly and strung them on twine using a larger needle. For the Letter I wrapped grey yarn around a wooden letter that you can find at a craft store. I used a hot glue gun to hold down the yard in certain spots.

TuTu

Most of my friends have all boys... so now that my friend Amy is pregnant with a little girl, I had to jump on the opportunity to make something fun and extra girlie! What's more girlie then a little pink tutu? This tutu was really easy to make and requires no sewing. A lot of people use elastic to tie the tull to, however I used a ribbon that ties in the back. All you need for this project is tulling and elastic or ribbon. It was really easy and convenient to buy the 6" spools of tulling, which I found at Hobby Lobby for $4.99 for 25 yards. I have plenty leftover to make another one. All you need to do is cut the tulling to the desired length, (but know that it will actually be tied to only half the total length) and tie it onto the elastic or ribbon with the knots all lined at the bottom.

Appliqued Onesies

These are fun to make, and can make wonderful gifts for a new baby. I made mine on a small t-shirt instead of a onsie for Hudson to wear on his first birthday. I love the dog sillouettes used on this Martha Stewart video, however I used a whale for the one I made. Here is a link to one of the dog templates. Get creative: you can add a button for an eye, extra decorative stitching, embroidery for personalization, or use felt to add a little extra something (as I did with the number 1).

Memory Jar

This is a memory jar that I just made for my Aunt who got married last year on Valentine's Day. The memory jar is customized for their wedding day and contains the following: 12 pictures cards, envelope to hold wedding memorabilia, wedding date card, card with ideas for filling the jar, heart confetti, and cards for their favorite things to do together. Diaper Cakes

Seeing that I love cake decorating, i guess it was only a matter of time before I learned how to decorate diapers. Diaper cakes can be a lot of fun to make and to receive. They can even be kept in the baby's room as a decoration. Here's one I made for my friend Jessica's baby shower that was Rock Star themed.

Aprons by "That's Sew Lexi"

Aprons make a great gift for a new bride or for anyone who loves to cook or bake. This is my new apron, and I love it! It makes me feel extra girly when I am in the kitchen. They are made by "That's Sew Lexi", visit her blog for more information on how to get one of these adorable aprons.

Make a Frame

This is a fun craft that is easy to do and only takes an hour or two to complete. They are great to make for your own home or as a gift. All you need is a wood frame, a piece of scrapbook paper that you like, matching paint, and some buttons or anything else you would like to attach to the front. Start by painting your frame along the sides and the back. Once it is finished drying you can trace the shape of the frame onto your paper. Cut out the paper and mod podge it on to the wood frame. Once that has dried you can gently sand the edges of your frame to make them smooth. Now you can attach anything you'd like to the front. The scrap booking letters are great for putting words on the frame.
